Today, we want to share essential information for those who wish to change the color of their eyes and for those who are currently undergoing the procedure. In this article, we explore the crucial role that collagen plays in the iris and how it affects the final outcome of this procedure.<\/p>\n

he iris, that colorful part of our eyes, is mainly composed of a protein called collagen type I<\/strong>, which is found in various connective tissues in the human body. Connective tissues are a group of tissues that provide structural support and connections between different parts of the body, such as the skin, bones, and tendons. Additionally, we find collagen type IV<\/strong> in the basement membrane of the iris epithelium, which also plays an important role in its structure.<\/p>\n

Before any patient undergoes laser iridoplasty at Eyecos, we classify the iris into five distinct grades<\/strong> based on the amount of melanin present. We use a pigmentation scale from 1 to 5, where grade 1 represents lighter eyes with less pigment, and grade 5 corresponds to darker colors with higher pigmentation.<\/p>\n

Regardless of this classification, in grades 2 and 3, we also assess the collagen density of our patients. In very dark eyes (grades 4 and 5), collagen is concealed behind melanin, making its precise measurement challenging.<\/p>\n

The collagen density<\/strong> in the iris is a noteworthy factor as it impacts how the aesthetic result of laser iridoplasty appears, determining whether the color will be brighter or more opaque. This information is crucial for our patients to understand the potential variations in the final outcome of their eye color change.<\/p>\n

To illustrate this concept, we have included images showing the difference between an iris with opaque areas (lower collagen density) and one with bright areas (higher collagen density)<\/strong>. These images provide a visual representation of how collagen can affect the appearance of the eyes after our treatment.<\/p>\n
